Industrial employees work directly with hazardous chemicals, electric lines, and other dangerous conditions that can endanger their overall well-being if adequate precautionary measures are not taken. Inability to follow safe procedures can lead to lost work time, greater employees’ compensation expenses, permanent disfigurement, and even loss of life.
Let’s take a quick look at some of the basic labeling standards an industrial facility should follow to ensure its workers’ safety.
Cable Tray Tagging
Power comes in from the electric utility on either a cable tray or some other raceway. According to the 2011 National Electrical Code, it is imperative to label the cable tray with the wording “Service Entrance Conductors”. Cable trays containing conductors over 600 volts are required to be marked “Danger – High Voltage – Keep Away”. Depending on the specifications, the color is usually black print on white or yellow vinyl. The “Danger –High Voltage” labels are white print on red vinyl.
Service Equipment
Another important labeling consideration is to print the maximum fault current on the service disconnect. The value represents the maximum current the breaker can handle before destruction.
Service Disconnect
If you have multiple service disconnects in your facility, make sure to label all of them as “Service Disconnect”. You can even use an additional label to mention the position of the other disconnects. This strategy can offer you great benefits in an emergency situation. With these labels, your emergency staff will be able to shut down all electricity to the building, if needed.
Always consult with your Safety and Regulatory Teams for your specific labeling specifications.
