Many things around us can seem deceivingly simple. Take industrial and electronic identification, for instance. Buy a printer, print some labels and apply them. Not really that complicated, right?
No, it’s not that complicated. Ah, but the devil is in the details. Not the printer details. Your details.
Labeling equipment is plentiful across the web. Many online general catalogues contain various printers and materials. Online self-service allow purchases of labeling systems without actually having to talk to anyone. It is expected that descriptions of labeling equipment available is all you need to choose the right solution.
Vendors that provide detailed information on labeling products are only providing half of the picture. The specs and features half. The missing half is your unique requirements. Vendors that encourage questions about the job to be done are able to paint a total picture – what is needed and what equipment and materials can do it.
When choosing the right label printer, there are some basic questions that need answering:
- What am I marking — wires, or things that need labels?
- What is the surface that the label needs to adhere to and for how long?
- Do I need the mobility of a portable printer, or the production of a computer connected printer?
- Will I print a few or a lot?
- Is there one operator or many?
- Does the printed legend require CSA certification?
The answers to these questions will help to define the choice of printer and label material. Your supplier should be asking these questions before recommending anything. Your details are (at least) half the picture.
