Labels are used for various and different purposes. Surprisingly, the uses of labels and tags are not predefined. Labels can be used in any setting where there is a need for them. The following are some unique places where labels can be used within industrial settings:
1. Vehicles
Many industries have freight-lifting and forklift vehicles. These vehicles need labels to ensure that operators are completely aware of all operation-related information and any warnings associated with that specific vehicle. Vehicle labels can also have a list of post -operation and pre-operation practices to ensure the vehicles are operated safely and properly. We all recognize the ubiquitous fleet number labels on the side of company vehicles, such as Unit # 102.
2. Machines
Just like vehicles, machines must also be labeled. This supports industry regulations and operator understanding of machine functions. Machinery labels can also serve as warning or caution signs such as the symbol with a hand inside a gear. Watch out for your hands!
3. Electrical Panels
Electrical panel labels and cable tags identify important wires and their specifications. This identification can make a difference between life and death, such as with Arc Flash labels. Electrical panel labels can warn not to come in contact with machinery when powered on.
4. Emergency Apparatus
Labels are also used to point out emergency apparatus that may not be noticed otherwise. In the case of an emergency, labels can direct workers and authorities towards emergency apparatus to assist in the crisis. Such apparatus may include fire extinguishers and eyewash stations. These types of labels are commonly referred to as safety labels.
5. Entrance and Exits.
Labels and signs pointing towards exits and entrances can be very helpful in a complex industrial setting. These help workers with directions and also ensure everyone’s safety. These labels prohibit accidental entry into restricted or hazardous areas. Labels can identify a specially controlled environment and if any special apparel must be worn. Luminous or glow-in-the-dark materials are often used for entrance and exit labels.
6. Medical Equipment
Hospitals, medical labs and medical manufacturing facilities are filled with labels, lamicoids, tags and pipe markers. Every electrical faceplate, door/room number, device, monitor and even beds are labeled and coloured for identification. The importance of proper labeling when dealing with public health goes without saying.
The examples above underscore the need for proper identification in many settings. Proper identification clarifies what’s important and saves lives.
